In an effort to weed out fraud, many retail stores ask to scan your ID when you make a return. While this may seem relatively harmless, it means they're storing personal information about you in their systems—but what are they storing, exactly? CBS Sacramento's Kurtis Ming decided to find out.
Anything on your ID or driver's license card is encoded into the magnetic strip on the back. When a store scans it, they can retain all of this information. That includes your name, address, birth date, hair color, eye color, height, and weight. This practice is perfectly legal in the name of fraud prevention, but that's a little excessive when simply your name would be sufficient for tracking returns. Because many stores require ID scanning, you simply can't make a return without it. If you don't want to be tracked, find out a store's policy before your purchase and go elsewhere if you prefer.
