We mentioned the slimmed-down Raspberry Pi Model A when it was released in Europe early last month, but now the $25 computer is officially available stateside as well.
The Model A does sacrifice one of its older brother's two USB ports, as well as its ethernet port. For most projects that we've featured, those exclusions will make things challenging, but you could hook up a USB hub and USB ethernet adapter to add some flexibility. The Model A only consumes about a third of the power of the beefier Model B, so this could be perfect if you're using it for any solar or self-powered projects. The cheaper Pi will also suffice if you just want an inexpensive box to practice Python or tool around in the Linux command line.
Unfortunately, availability of the Model A is extremely limited for now. Allied Electronics appears to be the only official US outlet selling them at the moment, and they already sold out of their first batch. They aren't taking preorders, so keep an eye on that page If you want to pick one up, and check out our beginner's guide to the Raspberry Pi while you wait.
