The Evernote Smart Notebook by Moleskine is a special notebook that combines the pleasantness of writing in a Moleskine with the appeal of having your handwritten pages auto-tagged, searchable, and backed up in the cloud as Evernote notes. They're a smart buy if you're planning on upgrading to Evernote Premium.
To turn your pages into Evernote notes, you take a picture of the page with the Evernote iOS or Android app. It then automatically becomes a new note in Evernote, with your text searchable. Although you can do this already with any notebook or piece of paper, these Moleskine notebooks feature specially patterned lines so Evernote can more easily recognize your writing and what's on the page. I found the search recognition to work really well with the Smart Notebook.
The notebook also comes with four sheets of stickers that can be used to automatically tag your pages. This handy feature is only available right now for the iOS apps, however, using the new Evernote Page Camera feature. It's a little odd to need instructions for how to use a paper notebook, but to tell the truth I had to look up the instructions to make sense of what the default tags are for the stickers (you can change the tags in the Evernote iOS app). Also, if you're not very good at taking sharp photos (I'm not) or your handwriting is worse than a kindergartener's your success with these notebooks can be hit or miss.
That said, the Evernote Smart Notebooks are really worthwhile if you're interested in Evernote Premium, which gives you more upload capacity and bigger notes, offline notebooks on mobile, faster image recognition, and more. Each notebook comes with three free months of Evernote Premium, worth $15. So while the notebooks cost almost twice as much as regular Moleskines ($25 for the small Evernote one versus $12 for the regular or $30 for the large Evernote versus $18 for the regular), if you subtract the $15 Evernote Premium value, the notebooks actually cost less than the regular Moleskines.
