Download this Snowball Debt Calculator and Plan to Get Out of Debt

If you're struggling with paying down credit cards or loans, the "Snowball Method" gives you a way to pay down each debt, then roll what you would have paid into payments for next account once each is paid off. It's a fast and predictable way to get out of debt, and this downloadable calculator makes it easy.

The calculator comes in in the form of a downloadable Microsoft Excel template that you can add to Excel 2003 or later. Once you've opened it up, enter each of your credit cards, loans, or other debts into each row, along with their outstanding balances, interest rates, and how much you can afford to put to each debt every month (at least the minimum payment). Then select whether you want to pay the highest interest first or the highest balance first, and the calculator will tell you how much to put where. You'll even get a graph that shows you how long it'll take to get out of debt completely.

The best thing about the snowball method is that you can tweak it to fit the way you want to pay down your debts. If you prefer the mathematically sound method and pay in order of interest (this is the method most people prefer, because you wind up paying less in interest over time) or you prefer the psychologically sound and pay in order of balance (you wind up paying more over time, but some people report feeling more accomplished and motivated this way), the spreadsheet works either way. It'll also show you how much extra you'll save (or pay) depending on the method you choose. Hit the link below to download it.

Bookend Your Week for Productivity with These Monday and Friday Tips

Summer is now behind us and some of us might have a hard time getting back to work. Unfortunately, we don't have the choice (well I don't know about you but I don't). So it's the perfect time of the year to figure out what we want to achieve this year and how we gonna organize ourselves to complete our goals.

Creative people might need to renew their creativity, business people will need to find new ways to make money, tech guys would probably have to surpass themselves to create new innovative products, and so on.

We need to get back on track quickly to motivate ourselves for this coming year!
We need to Get Shit Done and to do it right.

Introduction

It all starts right here (editor notes: from now I'll speak at the first person, because I'm kind of talking to myself…).
So first of all, I need motivation to Get Shit Done… but you know, sometimes it's just really hard to come back to work after three weeks on vacation. During my first week back, I kept telling myself: "Why am I still working while being on vacation is the thing I like most?" Well, guess what, I need money. But don't misunderstand me, I really do love my job, but I also really do love spending my days surfing and having apĂ©ro right by the sea.

What I need to get back on track quickly and efficiently it's new objectives, new goals, new challenges. I don't want to be stuck in a work routine. I need to build something, to improve myself, to try to make our world a better place (am I being too much? Let's stop there then).

So, I decided that this year I'll be really Getting Shit Done. And to do so, I decided to focus on two things: my motivation and my personal organization.

Motivation Monday

What Motivation monday is about? It's just this time of the week when I tell myself that I love what I'm doing and that in some ways I'm doing some good (I'm not saving Pandas in the Rain Forest, but I work for a tech company that helps people getting organized). From there, I stop complaining and I start looking ahead instead of behind.

As long as my boss keeps on being a great boss, I'll be the only one to manage my motivation. To Get Shit Done I need to get my shit together and to dedicate some time to understand why and what am I working for.

So from now on, on Mondays I'll motivate myself!

May the organization tools be with you

You know they are tools out there created by smart peoples who want to help you (and make money too of course). You know those tools have been built to improve your way of organizing yourself and to save you time. But you've always been too lazy to try them (if you've tried them all you can skip this part).

What if I tell you that it all started with Evernote. At one point in my life I was a freelancer, so a good friend of mine told me about Evernote: "You should try it, you'll see you can organize all of your content according to your clients, you'll save so much time". So I tried it, but I was so busy at that time that I just quit after 10min on the application telling myself "I can't afford to loose time for that, it's gonna take me for ages to understand how everything works and how it will save me time". And I kept on going with my Word Documents and my notepad. How foolish I was at that time… (in my defense it was three years ago and at that time I was working in the art industry, so not really a tech lover).
But somehow I ended up being a manager, so now I really don't have time for anything. I radically changed my way of working and I tried to find the best tools that could help me save some time!

For my daily organization:
- Media watch : Mention
- Storage : Dropbox
- Content managing : Evernote and Google Drive
- Task Management : Azendoo
- Smart reading / business intelligence : Pocket
- Emails: ?? I still haven't found the right application to manage my email inbox… Any help on that?

Back to work, it's time to try new tools! Getting Shit Done is about being organized.

Debrief friday

In other words to Get Shit Done I need: motivations, good tools, (a cool job) but also time to overview my weekly work.

That's what Debrief Friday is about. If nobody is going to tell me wether I'm doing a good job or not, I have to take care of it myself. And even if someone is evaluating my work I still need to have a personal view on it.
Therefore, every friday afternoon I regroup the task I've accomplished during the week and evaluate my work. Not really to congratulate or blame myself, but to have a global overview on my work and to understand how I am (or I am not) Getting Shit Done.

To conclude

Yes summer is over, get over it! Now it's time to get yourself organized, to look for productivity hacks and to stop complaining!

Block Ads on All Your Devices with a Raspberry Pi

Ads can be one of the internet's more annoying things, and there are few things worse than watching a flash animation for deodorant suck up all your bandwidth. While you have plenty of software solutions to block ads, you can also do it on a deeper level with a Raspberry Pi.

This projects turns your Raspberry Pi into a wireless access point, then installs software that makes ads time out. Then, you route your traffic through the Raspberry Pi and that blocks ads on all your devices, from your tablet to your game console. Head over to Adafruit for the full guide.

A Month Inside Apple's Walled Garden: It's Not as Bad as You'd Think

When you buy an Apple device, you agree to a bunch of restrictions. You don’t have as much control over your phone, third-party apps don’t have access to all the features that Apple’s software does, and they ban tons of other apps from their store. But if you agree to live under their roof you have the benefits of faster, super-integrated apps. So what’s better: going your own way, or life as Apple intended?

I decided to find out if using an iPhone, as Apple intended it, worked better than resorting to crippled (but still awesome) third party apps. I put myself through this supposed misery for a month and learned some things I already knew and a few things that surprised me. I also approached this trial partially on iOS 6 and partially on iOS 7 to sample the modest freedoms we’re gaining in the latest version of Apple’s mobile OS. The verdict? Apple’s walled garden may make a lot of sense for those who just want a seamless experience with their phone, but not for anyone who thinks of their mobile like a superpower. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of living with Apple’s restrictions.

A Month Inside Apple's Walled Garden: It's Not as Bad as You'd Think

When you sign up for the Apple ecosystem, most everything in it works together. The company designs their software with numerous advantages so third party apps can’t really compete with them. Apple reserves a variety of APIs—that’s application programming interfaces, for the uninitiated—just for their apps and, until iOS 7, only allowed their own software to fully run in the background. You just can’t get these features if you go with a third-party solution.

Let’s take a look at what you gain with the default apps:

Email integrates with everything. When you want to send a photo, apps naturally call up Apple’s default interface. They don’t request Sparrow, Gmail, Evomail, or whatever else you prefer. Even if you use a third-party email app, you still kind of have to configure your accounts in iOS anyway because you’ll have to use it for sharing within apps no matter what. Sticking with it as your default mail app eliminates jumping around.

Apple's apps integrate with Siri out of the box. Siri can add notes and reminders to your phone, start navigation, or perform other tasks much faster than you can in most circumstances. Unfortunately, Siri only works with Apple's built-in apps so you have to resort to typing in lots of third-party alternatives. A jailbreak can add enhanced functionality, but only users of iOS 6.1.2 (and earlier) have that opportunity and it still doesn't cover everything.

Your settings sync everywhere Apple approves, which works quite well if you buy into their entire ecosystem. If you only have iDevices and Macs, you’re covered. If not, you just don’t get that benefit. Of course, if you just care about syncing your personal data (more on this later) you can access it on any device through iCloud.com.

Now, let’s take a look at what you lose:

You have to use Safari. If you sync browser data with Safari, you can’t use it on your Android tablet or other device. (Windows users, however, can sync Safari bookmarks and data to Internet Explorer.) The same goes for most browsers, and you certainly make a similar sacrifice by using something like Chrome, but at least Chrome gives you access throughout all platforms and it’s actually a great browser. Safari works really well as a mobile option, but doesn’t provide important features you get with Chrome on the desktop or even on the iPhone. However you approach it, you lose out somehow with Safari.

You lose native app support on non-Apple platforms. Other apps, like Notes and Reminders, don’t have native apps on Windows or Android. (You can, however, use iCloud sync to transfer data to native Windows apps.) Of course, Apple provides access to your data on iCloud.com so you can grab it from anywhere if you need to. While not ideal, they don’t lock you out (which makes this a pretty minor disadvantage).

Apple Mail doesn’t like Gmail as much as some apps, so you lose out on a bunch of Gmail-specific features and paradigms. I don’t consider this a downside, but die-hard Gmail fans tend to hate the built-in Mail app because it lacks the option to archive or delete (you have to choose one), stars (flags instead), labels (folders instead), priority inbox, and pretty much any other special feature Google offers.

I found the advantages often outweighed the problems here. Apple provides a well-integrated experience and it doesn’t require that you sacrifice too much. While I prefer Sparrow as a mail app, I like using one Mail app instead of two. The same goes for the web browser, but even more so due to so many links automatically opening in Safari. Third-party app replacements require a balancing act, and if you just want a phone that handles the basics elegantly it just isn’t worth the trouble.

A Month Inside Apple's Walled Garden: It's Not as Bad as You'd Think

Apple doesn’t understand the internet. It can’t handle synchronization as well as Google and other companies. Mind you, synchronization isn’t easy. You’ll boggle your mind if you try to think up an algorithm that can account for any possible change in a file and then figure out which one to keep across all your devices. Even still, Apple tried to oversimplify the problem, which just made things worse. They keep local and cloud-based copies of your data, and you can turn synchronization on without that data ever leaving your device because you accidentally stored it in the wrong section.

Let’s take a look at what you gain with Apple’s internet-based services:

iMessage. While not perfect—something we’ll get to shortly—iMessage makes communicating much easier if you have iDevices and Macs. If you hate texting on your phone and prefer to type things out on a keyboard, you can use your Mac to respond. If you forego Apple services, you have to poke away at your iPhone or go through something significantly more complicated like Google Voice.

All your personal data syncs and backs up automatically. In a perfect world, all your Apple data will sync. If you set it up right, you get everything everywhere—so long as you only use Apple platforms. This can help a lot of people who stick with in the Apple universe, but if you step outside it becomes very restrictive.

iTunes Match eliminates the need to sync with iTunes. It didn’t work so well when it began, but now iTunes Match makes downloading the music you want and keeping the rest in the cloud a real possibility. I think this has more to do with Apple’s adoption of LTE than anything else. 3G just doesn’t stream so well, at least if you subscribe to AT&T.

Now, let’s take a look at what you lose by sticking with Apple services:

You sacrifice consistency and reliability. To give Apple due credit, iCloud works a lot better than it initially did and significantly better than its predecessors. That said, iCloud is much less reliable than other solutions. For reasons described earlier, sometimes things just don’t work because you didn’t set them up right—a very un-Apple-like problem, ironically—and network issues cause all sorts of problems from time to time.

iMessage jumbles things up, causing your conversations to appear out of order on other devices. If you start a conversation on one device and switch to another, you might find certain messages came in at the wrong times, you’re missing half the conversation, or you’re missing the entire thing. That said, it still beats pretty much any third-party option around and hopefully iOS 7 (and the forthcoming OS X Mavericks) addresses this issue. So far, we have no official word or evidence but just hopeful speculation.

You can't use cheaper, third-party music options like Google Play Music. That said, whatever happened to the Google Play Music app iOS users were promised?

When it comes to the cloud, Apple just doesn’t do a great job. I still like a lot of the services and think iMessage justifies its bugs. That said, most everything causes a gigantic headache and you shouldn’t even bother. iOS allows you to sync with Google services, and you should just use those instead.

A Month Inside Apple's Walled Garden: It's Not as Bad as You'd Think

Apple’s apps have access to private APIs they don’t provide to third-party developers. That allows them to make their apps perform magical tasks other apps cannot. Sure, a developer could find out about a secret API and use it, but then Apple would remove their app from the App Store in the event they found out. When it comes to sheer performance, both in speed and in battery life, Apple’s apps will almost always perform better.

Let’s take a look at the advantages of Apple’s performance gains:

In general, you get faster speeds all around. We’ll get more specific in a minute, but Apple’s apps just perform a heck of a lot better overall. Some developers manage to eke out every last bit of performance and you’d never really know, but certain ones (I’m looking at you, EvoMail), can’t seem to grasp it. With Apple, you get solid performance with pretty much everything—even the App Store, finally, in iOS 7.

Safari wins just about every JavaScript benchmark because it has access to a JavaScript engine that uses lower-level system processes that other apps can’t. This sucks, but what can you do. Apple keeps their advantage here by not sharing.

Apple video apps use less battery and less power because they use hardware acceleration. Other video apps, like VLC, struggle to keep up. On older devices, apps like VLC can't even play HD video—something Apple's video app does just fine.

Now let’s take a look at what you lose:

You get fewer features with Apple apps, which means if you want to play an MKV file in VLC or use Chrome because it syncs your bookmarks, you can’t. You need to take the time to convert your video and sync your Chrome bookmarks with Safari just to make it work with your Apple solution. This is really annoying.

Apple rarely updates their apps. In fact, Apple default apps tend to only get updates with system updates. Want new features? You have to wait a year.

Fortunately you can easily mix and match here. When Apple apps work better, you can use them primarily and have a third-party app fill in the gaps. That doesn’t work in every case (e.g. bookmark syncing with Chrome) but it does with most.

While third-party apps may work better, you didn’t buy an iPhone because you wanted choice. People buy iPhones because they work well and they look nice. You know what to expect from Apple’s mobile darling, and that’s pretty comforting if you rely on your smartphone for many daily tasks. You don’t have to maintain it like a computer. You know it’ll be there for you when you need it. You can get fed up with restrictions and a lack of options, but do you really need your phone to do everything you ever wanted? Do you really need that much choice?

You kind of have to accept the ramifications of going Apple. Your money votes for Apple’s walled garden whether you like it or not. You chose a device that sacrifices choice for comfort. If you don’t like that, you probably purchased the wrong smartphone. So should you just stop worrying and love the walled garden? Yes, to some extent. When the restrictions make your life complicated and frustrating because a third-party app can’t do what you want it to do, let it go. If you can get the experience you want by dumping parts of Apple’s proposed lifestyle, go right ahead. In the end, if you can’t get what you want with iOS you can always jump ship to Android. It all comes down to the types of sacrifices you want to make.

Chirp Sends Photos and Links Between Devices Using Sound

Android/iOS: Despite modern advancements in file transfer technology, transmitting pictures or links between two devices is still a pain sometimes. Chirp makes it as easy as listening to a two-second sound clip.

Chirp allows users to send pictures, notes, and links to each other without having to designate an email address, pair via Bluetooth, or anything else. It simply generates a short audio clip that any device nearby can pick up if it has the app open. While it's not good for secure transfers per se, it's handy if you want to send files to multiple people at once.

Feed your Garden Now for Great Spring Planting Soil

Around here, the harvest season is on and most people are pulling up their gardens, but there's one thing you should do now to prep for next year: Give your soil a little "garden food" so it's full of nutrients when you start planting next year. Grab a plastic bag; all you need are some fallen leaves.

Most people finish with their gardens in the late summer and fall and forget about them until next April or May. Our friends over at Old World Garden Farms explain that a little organic material over those plant beds in the fall will do wonders come spring. Plus, some of the best "garden food" in the world is easy to find everywhere, for free, right now:

We take leaves and shred them up with our lawnmower – and then spread a 2” layer on top of each raised planting row. You can either dig it into your soil with a pitchfork – or let it decompose on top and turn it under next spring before planting. This latter method also helps to provide your soil with protection from the winter winds and erosion.

If you are not blessed with trees on your property – take a drive around and find neighborhoods that are – it usually won’t take long to find them. Many times, the hard work is done for you – with the homeowners already raking leaves to their curb or even bagging them up curbside for pickup. A simple asking of the homeowner can usually net you more than you can handle.

They also note that if you compost, a layer on your planting beds in the fall will make sure the soil is rich come spring, and if you're really serious, consider planting a cover crop to loosen the soil, minimize erosion, and keep weeds from growing. The super-serious can do all three of these things, but if you have a small plot in your backyard, some discarded leaves or compost may be more than enough to ensure a great growing season next year.

How Can I Get Decent Internet in a Rural Setting?

Even if you're not in a truly remote area, getting just a little outside the boundaries of local cable and DSL providers can mean real problems for internet access. If you've got experience getting internet service outside regular service zones, come help out a fellow reader.

John writes:

I will soon be moving from a small Midwest city to a farm house that has been in my family for generations. My fiance and I decided a while back that we were looking for some more room to plant our own food and generally be more self sustaining. So far I haven't been able to come up with a good solution for internet access on our new property. We won't be in the middle of no where, only about 10 miles from where we live now, there's no cable or DSL service. I have no experience with satellite internet providers or mobile hotspots and I wondered if you had an advice on these fronts. Or maybe there are some options that I am not considering?

Some of my work involves teaching classes online. I know that I could do that work from either my office space or a coffee shop, but there would be some advantages to doing it from home as well. We have also "cut the cord" at our house in town and have been making use of online streaming services and a traditional television antenna.

Have some advice for John? Post it below!

Make a Slight Change in Perspective to Minimize Painful Memories

We tend to remember events from an immersive, first-person perspective. This causes us to get lost in that moment and conjure up emotions we may not enjoy. The solution? Think about things from a third-person perspective and you won't have that problem.

Guy Winch, psychologist and author of Emotional First Aid, cites a study that demonstrates how a shift in perspective makes a profound difference:

[Ozlem Ayduk from the University of California and Ethan Kross from the University of Michigan] had participants replay emotionally painful memories from a third-person perspective—which involves visualizing ourselves within the scene as if we were watching it from the perspective of an outside observer. The difference between the two types of perspectives was profound. Participants reported feeling significantly less emotional pain when they envisioned the memory using a third-person perspective than when using a first-person perspective. Further, utilizing a psychologically distant vantage point also allowed them to reconstruct their understanding of their experiences and reach new insights and feelings of closure.

To achieve this new perspective, Winch suggests a little practice. Start by lying down and making yourself comfortable, then think of a potentially painful memory. Take a moment to "zoom out" from that recollection and watch it as an onlooker. This may feel awkward at first but with a little practice you can get used to remembering in the third-person and downplaying an excessive pain from a traumatic memory.

Printer Trips, Label Residue, and Navigation Safety

Readers offer their best tips for reducing trips to your printer, removing sticky label residue, and keeping your home address private.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasons—maybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it in—the tip didn't make the front page. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favorites for your buffet-style consumption. Got a tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments, email it to tips at lifehacker.com, or share it over at our user-run blog, Hackerspace.

Printer Trips, Label Residue, and Navigation Safety

Nigel shares how he reduces the number of trips he has to make to his office printer room:

I work for a law firm and print from a number of programs to a shared printer down the corridor. To reduce the amount of time I spend running to and from the printer, I now print using a PDF printer (PDF Creator in my case) and append each document to a PDF file imaginatively named "print". I then print all the documents from that file a couple of times a day. It has saved me quite a bit of time. I can also time my printing to a less busy time so I don't have to queue so much.

Printer Trips, Label Residue, and Navigation Safety

Wednesday gives us a tip for removing sticky label residue using packing tape:

I hate it when I get new bowls, coffee mugs or water bottles and can't get price sticker off without making a mess. I have found that you can use packing tape to get rid of all that unwanted sticky residue. Simply cut off a piece of tape, stick and press it over the residue then pull it off. It may take a few tries to get it all off but it will work without smearing and creating a bigger mess.

Baron shares a creative way to keep people from finding out your home address if they get hold of your gadgets:

Many new cars allow users to Save their home address to the GPS and Google Now provides a "Take me Home" feature. My family and I decided it was safer to save the address of the nearest police station as our home address. Getting home from there is easy and if someone were to steal your car and drive into a police station...well that would just be hilarious.

Gena shares a clever way save a little bit of time and frustration when you click the wrong icon:

It's frustrating when you go to run a program, hit the wrong icon, and then have to wait while some monster program like Outlook runs—just so you can close it again and run the program you wanted to in the first place. I had the idea to alternate icons on my Windows taskbar by how long they take to load. Sure, I'll occasionally want to load Calculator and end up clicking a big program by mistake, but I found that the programs I run the most are the big ones. Just a little time saver that's helped me out.

Line Measuring Cups With Plastic Wrap When Measuring Wet Ingredients

Measuring butter or shortening almost always wastes a bit since you can't dig every dollop out of your measuring cup. Make it easier to remove the ingredients with a piece of plastic wrap.

Before you measure out what you need, line the inside of your measuring cup with a piece of plastic wrap. Fill in as much as you need then simply lift the plastic out and scrape/pour it off into the pot. Not only will this save a bit of your butter, it will also leave you with a clean, dry measuring cup for the next thing you need to dole out.

Search Spotlight from the OS X Terminal

While you can use Spotlight pretty easily with the Command+Space hotkey, you might want a little more control over the results you get. Utilizing the mdfind command in the OS X Terminal can make that happen quickly.

Take this for example:

> mdfind -name homebrew

That command will tell mdfind—the process that handles Spotlight searches—to search by name and find any file name containing the word homebrew. It can do a whole lot more, too. If you want to learn the different kind of searches you can perform in the terminal with mdfind, check out its man page.

Re-Train Your Brain to Overcome "Microwave Mentality"

If you're looking for results in your business or personal life and feeling frustrated that it's taking too long, perhaps you need to drop the microwave mentality. Remember: anything that's worth something takes time.

I recall one day standing by my microwave and thinking to myself, “Man, this sure is taking a long time!” As soon as those words entered my mind, I realized that I had been conditioned by instant-gratification ideology. I was no longer patient. I wanted instant results—results so quickly that I considered the microwave as taking too much time. This was an eye-opener for me.

To be honest with ourselves, how many times have we wanted to be the exception to every rule? I want to lose weight, but I don’t want to stop eating dessert, candy bars, and fried foods. I want to lose weight, but I don’t want to exercise. I want to lose weight, but I want it now without any work put into it. I want to build a business, but I don’t want to start from the foundation. I want a successful business, but I don’t want to spend time and money to make it happen. I want to build a business, but I want it now without any work put into it. So, what can we do to change this mentality?

In today’s society, when everything is running at lightning speed, it's easy for us to pick up this mentality and begin to get frustrated at the time it actually takes to become successful. “Anything worth doing is worth doing right,” is a Hunter S. Thompson quote that my grandmother used to say to me. There's truth in that statement.

So how can we train our brains to understand this concept and keep from being frustrated? To begin with, realize that everything needs to be built on a strong, lasting foundation. A house being built is not finished overnight. The builders will begin with a foundation. In order to have anything of lasting value it must be started on a strong footing. The groundwork may take time, yet it's essential for quality to be prevalent. This is true in our lives as well.

If you're struggling with goals, whether they be professional or personal, you need to look at the finished product. After seeing the finished product in your mind, begin to break your goal down into segments. Often times, our frustration stems from looking at the big picture and feeling immobilized.

If you begin to break down the goal into smaller sections, you will find yourself moving along at a constant rate. You will no longer sense the frustration of not having finished your goal. You will begin to see each step of your accomplishment along the way. Celebrate the smaller victories, as you pace yourself for the remaining work. If you desire to lose 50 pounds, set mini goals along the way and celebrate your constant successes. When we see the forward motion of our performances, we begin to have patience for the results.

This is a practice used by the most successful people in the world today. When you write them down, remember to break them into small do-able sections. Each day do at least one thing to push you toward fulfillment of your goal. By incorporating this type of mentality you will begin to experience inner satisfaction from the triumphs you achieve. Jack Canfield, the co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul, writes his goals on index cards and reads them in the morning and evening each day. What a great habit! Before beginning to set a goal, do research on someone who has done this and see the amount of time and effort that it requires. You'll be able to gauge your activities against another person’s success. This will encourage you and keep you motivated toward completion.

I realize how simple it is to want instant gratification. We live in a fast-paced world and we desire fast-paced results, but the microwave mentality doesn’t work on anything of value in our lives. We need to realign our thinking. Pursue your goals and dreams with a desire for quality, regardless of the time and effort it takes. Remember, the only thing a microwave is really good for is to heat up leftovers!

Syllable Teaches You How to Speed Read

iOS: Speed reading is a great skill to have when you need to quickly get through a massive block of text, but it takes time to learn how to do it. Syllable is an app that teaches you speed reading techniques by pulling articles from your clipboard, Pocket, or Instapaper.

We've talked about speed reading before and Syllable teaches a technique that reduces subvocalization, which is when you read words to yourself in your head. Syllable does this by quickly pacing through the articles you give it quickly so you don't have the chance to read the words aloud. Syllable also allows you to use another technique called chunking where you only read certain words. If you want to learn how to speed read, Syllable's a nice way to do it since it integrates with Pocket and Instapaper. If nothing else maybe you'll actually get through that backlog of 200 long form articles you've saved.

The Best Web Browser for iPhone

While mobile Safari does most of what you'd need from a smartphone web browser, and there are many alternatives that fill in the gaps, we prefer Chrome. Google's browser offers excellent features, synchronization, and simplicity at no cost.

Platform: iPhone (and iPad)
Price: Free
Download Page

Unlimited browser "tabs"Syncs with your Google account to provide you with Chrome data from other browsers, including passwords, bookmarks, and moreSaves sessions so you can access sites on your mobile on the desktop, and vice-versaInstant searchEasily navigate with helpful gesturesPrivate browsing modeGoogle Chrome for iPhone inherits the goodness of its desktop counterpart. Chrome's syncing abilities truly make it wonderful, allowing you to take pretty much any data associated with Chrome and your Google account and have it on every single device the browser supports. That means you always have your bookmarks, passwords, history, search shortcuts, and so on. Google really does sync well, and that's where Chrome shines beyond Apple's Safari. That said, its other features pretty much stack up evenly. You might prefer its user interface or that of any other browser. Its feature set doesn't set it above a variety of other third-party options. When you want to know why Chrome is the best, just look at its syncing abilities. That's where it wins.

Chrome doesn't have a lot of features. It doesn't beat out mobile Safari in a variety of areas for this reason. As mentioned in the previous section, we like Chrome because it syncs so well. No other browser—including Safari—does such a great job. If you use Chrome on the desktop, you'll probably want it on your mobile. If you don't, however, you lose its main advantage. When it comes to a mobile browser, you generally want to match yours with your choice on the desktop to keep data in sync. We think Chrome does the best job on the desktop so naturally we feel you ought to make it your browser of choice on your iPhone as well.

Atomic, our previous top pick, has just about every feature you could possibly want in a mobile web browser (or a desktop web browser for that matter). You can clear history, cookies, and all sorts of other crap you don't want lying around on your mobile. In fact, Atomic will do it for you on quit so you don't even have to remember. You get proper tabbed browsing, which can be extended into kiosk mode (full screen) to make more room for the web page. Atomic even has advanced features like a download manager that can decompress zip archives, an ad blocker, and the ability to save web pages locally. It's easy to use, endlessly customizable, stable, and only costs $1 for the full version. It's really a fantastic browser with a great balance of all the things you'd really need, but might feel cumbersome to those who don't want a desktop-like experience.

Perfect Web Browser is a common alternative to Atomic, offering many of the same features and a fairly similar interface. It attempts to provide a desktop experience on your iPhone, but it definitely achieves that better on the iPad thanks to the extra screen real estate. It costs the same as Atomic (unless you want the iPad version, too, in which case Perfect will cost you an extra $4) and there's very little different, but we've used both for some time and just prefer Atomic. You may disagree, and at $1 each there's little risk in trying them both out.

360 Browser has an interesting user interface with lots of navigation shortcuts and adds support for Flash. Yes, Flash—that thing Apple basically banned from your iDevice. It also has support for Firefox sync so you can easily grab all your bookmarks, tabs, and passwords. Like the others, it'll only cost you $1.

Previously mentioned Meteoric Download Manager is technically not advertised as a web browser, but it works as one just the same. You won't get a desktop-like browsing experience, but if your focus is downloading and managing files it is an excellent option.

The Scientific Way to Mend a Broken Heart

Most of us have experienced heartbreak, and when you think about how it made you feel, it's very similar to physical pain and suffering. That's no mistake—our brains process physical pain and emotional pain in similar ways. This video explains why, and how you can ease that pain when it happens to you.

AsapSCIENCE reminds us in the video above that physical pain and emotional pain are both handled by the anterior cingulate cortex, a portion of our brains responsible for a number of higher emotional and cognitive functions like decision making and empathy as well as regulating pain response in terms of blood pressure and heart rate.

When you touch something hot or break up with your significant other, the same region of the brain lights up—albeit in context and scale with the significance of the pain you're experiencing. Of course, bandages and painkillers work on cuts and bruises, but how do you minimize emotional pain from a breakup or some other social falling out? The key is to surround yourself with friends and family. It may be difficult, and you may already know you should, but a strong social support structure has been shown to help minimize drastic changes in cortisol and norepinephrine levels in the brain—both hormones associated with stress response. Essentially, there's a very scientific reason for why surrounding yourself with friends will help keep you sane and on the level, even through tough times.

Type Faster with OS X's Autocomplete

Typically speaking, autocomplete is really only handy on phones, but MacWorld points out that it's pretty helpful on the desktop if you use it right.

Autocomplete is handy in a few ways. First off, you can use it when you don't know exactly how to spell a word. Second, you can just use it type out long words faster. In OS X, just start typing the first few letters of a word, then hit Option-Escape. An autocomplete menu appears in most apps that'll allow you to quickly select the word you want. It doesn't work everywhere (it's not in Chrome, unfortunately), but you'll find it in some of Apple's apps like TextEdit.

ADB : BI Masih Punya Ruang Naikkan BI Rate Lagi

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Ekonom Asia Development Bank (ADB) Edimon Ginting menyatakan Bank Indonesia (BI) masih memiliki satu ruang lagi untuk menaikkan suku bunga acuan BI (BI rate) hingga akhir tahun.

Kapal Selam Nuklir Rusia Terbakar, 15 Pelaut Luka

Jokowi 5 Kali Cuti Jadi Jurkam, Basuki Belum Pernah

Gubernur dan Wakil Gubernur DKI Jakarta, saat memasuki ruangan kerja usai pelantikan di Balai Kota, Jakarta Pusat, Senin (15/10/2012). Jokowi-Ahok terpilih menjadi Gubernur dan Wakil Gubernur DKI Jakarta Periode 2012-2017. | WARTA KOTA/ANGGA BHAGYA NUGRAHA

Pemerintah Mulai Antisipasi Dampak Pengurangan Stimulus Fiskal AS

At Targhib wa At Tarhib no. 1175).

Dari Abu Hurairah, Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

??????? ??? ????????? ????? ?????? ???? ?????? ??????? ?????? ??????? ?????? ??????????? ??????????

(HR. Bukhari no. 1190 dan Muslim no. 1394).

Dari Abu Hurairah, Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

??? ?????? ??????? ??????????? ???????? ???? ??????? ??????????

(HR. Bukhari no. 1196 dan Muslim no. 1390).[1]

Dari Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

??? ??????? ?????????? ?????? ????? ????????? ????????? ??????????? ?????????? ? ?????????? ?????????? – ??? ???? ???? ???? – ?????????? ?????????

Bukhari 1189 dan Muslim no. 1397).

Ketika masuk masjid Nabawi, maka hendaklah mengucapkan do’a masuk masjid sebagaimana do’a yang dibaca ketika masuk masjid lainnya, di antara do’anya: “Bismillah wash sholaatu was salaamu ‘ala Rosulillah, allahummaghfirliy dzunuubi waftahlii abwaaba rohmatik”.

(HR. Muslim no. 1394) (Dinukil dari Fatawa Al Islam Sual wa Jawab no. 106574).

Fatwa Ulama: Lelaki Shalat Wajib Di Rumah, Apakah Diterima Shalatnya?

Soal:

Uhibbukum fillah yaa Syaikhana, wa baarakallahu fiikum, wa matta’akum bis sihhah wal ‘afiah (aku mencintaimu karena Allah wahai Syaikh, semoga Allah memberkahi anda, semoga Allah senantiasa memberikan anda kesehatan)

Jawab:

Ahabbakallah alladzi ahbabtanaa fiihi (semoga Allah mencintai anda karena sebab anda mencintai saya karena-Nya)

Rasulullah Shallallahu’alaihi Wasallam bersabda:

?? ??? ?????? ??? ???? ??? ???? ?? ??? ?? ???

????? ?? ??? ?????? ?? ??? ???????» ???: ???? ???: «???? ???? ??? ??? ?? ????

“apakah anda mendengar hayya ‘alas shalah hayya ‘alal falah? ia menjawab: ‘ia saya dengar’.

Wallahul Musta’an.
